Polymer Vision's Readius handheld

Polymer Vision, a unit of Philips Electronics, introduced the Readius handheld in 2005 and, in collaboration with mobile operator Telecom Italia Mobile, will soon launch the device commercially. In addition to many 3G phone functions, Wi-Fi compatibility and a mini-USB port, the device features a flexible black-and-white LED touch screen that rolls out 5 inches from the body of the phone.

With its large display, the Readius can serve as a PDA and e-book reader. The device will be among those showcased next week at the 3GSM World Congress in Barcelona.

Because its LED screen consumes relatively little power, the Readius needs to be recharged only about once every 10 days on average, according to Polymer Vision.

While many screens use four shades of gray to produce a black-and-white image, the Readius uses 16. The device also includes 4GB of storage capacity.

Polymer Vision has not yet disclosed where else, or when, the Readius will be launched after it debuts in Europe. Another detail not yet disclosed: the price.
