Moderate coffee drinking reduces many risks

Although the American Society for Nutrition’s popular “controversy session” at Experimental Biology 2007 focuses on the health effects of coffee drinking, panel chair Dr. James Coughlin, a toxicology/safety consultant at Coughlin & Associates, says that recent advances in epidemiologic and experimental knowledge have transformed many of the negative health myths about coffee drinking into validated health benefits.

Indeed, panel co-chair Dan Steffen, who follows coffee and health issues in the Scientific and Regulatory Affairs group of Kraft Foods, note that the “controversy” is often to educate a wider audience about this transformation in understanding.

Coffee is among the most widely consumed beverages in the world, and Dr. Coughlin says that the preponderance of scientific evidence - some by the panelists - suggests that moderate coffee consumption (3-5 cups per day) may be associated with reduced risk of certain disease conditions, such as Parkinson’s disease. Some research in neuropharamacology suggests that one cup of coffee can halve the risk of Parkinson’s disease. Other studies have found it reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease, kidney stones, gallstones, depression and even suicide.

VIZ: the future of powered water

According to the folks at VIZ, the problem with vitamin water is that the addition of vitamins and supplements to liquid decreases their potency, and the longer the drink sits on the shelf, the worse it gets. The solution is to add the supplements right before drinking, with the patent-pending VIZcap, "a cap with a sealed, moisture-free chamber that contains effervescence." It's the effervescence that preserves the potency. When you're ready to drink, you simply remove the seal, push the plunger and watch the ingredients interact with the water, powering your drink at full potency. It's a multi-sensory experience -- pushing the plunger creates a "pop" sound (I like that part -- sounds like those Japanese sodas that open when you push and drop a marble through the top of the bottle).

Surprise—men do just as much work as women do

Everyone from economists and sociologists to Oprah knows that women work more than men. Their longer combined hours, at the home and at the office, stop men from taking afternoon naps on the couch and cause fights that end with men spending nights on the couch. And yet according to new study, those longer hours are a myth, because it's just not true that women carry a heavier load.

Three economists, Michael Burda of Humboldt University in Berlin, Daniel Hamermesh of the University of Texas, and Philippe Weil of the Free University of Brussels have analyzed data from surveys in 25 countries that ask people how they spend their time. Some of the countries are rich, like the United States and Germany, some are poor, like Benin and Madagascar, and some are in the middle, like Hungary, Mexico, and Slovenia. The people surveyed were asked to fill in diaries indicating how they spend each segment of their day.

    Scientists Create the First Nanomachine

    An idea conceived by one of the world's greatest scientists nearly 150 years ago has finally been realised with a tiny machine that could eventually lead to lasers moving objects remotely.

    James Clerk Maxwell, who is ranked along Isaac Newton and Albert Einstein for his contributions to science, imagined an atom-sized device -- known as Maxwell's Demon -- that could trap molecules as they move in a specific direction.

    Now scientists at the University of Edinburgh, inspired by Maxwell's thought experiment in 1867, have been able to create such a "nanomachine" for the first time with their own "demon" inside it to ensnare the molecules as they move.

    The work, published in the 1 February issue of the journal Nature, could ultimately lead to scientists harnessing the energy of the molecules to displace solid objects from a distance.

    Professor David Leigh, of the University of Edinburgh's School of Chemistry, said: "Our machine has a device -- or ‘demon' if you like -- inside it that traps molecule-sized particles as they move in a certain direction. Maxwell reasoned that if such a system could ever be made it would need energy to work. Without energy, it might appear that the perpetual motion of the molecules could power other devices in the same way as a windmill, but Maxwell reasoned that this would go against the second law of thermodynamics.

    "As he predicted, the machine does need energy and in our experiment it is powered by light. While light has previously been used to energise tiny particles directly, this is the first time that a system has been devised to trap molecules as they move in a certain direction under their natural motion. Once the molecules are trapped they cannot escape."

    Applications of the nanotechnology machine could include trapping molecules to generate a force in front of a solid object using a laser pen. By shining the pen in the direction you want the object to move, the force of the molecules could be harnessed to push the object along.

    The invention of the nanotechnology machine builds on previous work at the university in which scientists were able to move a droplet of liquid up a slope using molecular force.

    "Last year was the 175th anniversary of James Clerk Maxwell's birth in Edinburgh, so it is fitting that advances in science mean that we can finally create a machine like the hypothetical one he pondered over so long ago," said Prof Leigh.

    "Maxwell was instrumental to our understanding of light, heat, and the behaviour of atoms and molecules. Without the foundations that he laid down a century-and-a-half ago, the science that we are doing today would not have been possible."

    Improved breast cancer screening from Z-Tech

    It's a known fact that the key to curing breast cancer is early detection and prompt treatment. Hence, recent reports suggesting that screening for breast cancer is declining among women in the U.S. is worrying health officials. The reasons cited for this decline include insufficient access to mammography facilities and, surpisingly, apathy and indifference among women about the entire process. The second reason could be related to the fact that mammography screening methods have always suffered from higher costs, dangers from increased exposure to harmful radiation and confusion over the diagnostic accuracy.

    The solution to tackling these issues may lie with the new breast screening device from Z-Tech. The device works on the principle that the breast tissue has electrical properties, and when malignancy sets in these tissues, electricity flows more easily through it. So by comparing the relative electrical impedance between the two breasts (in simpler words, the one that allows more electricity to flow through it), it is possible to detect the cancerous one. The actual physical setup consists of 12 flower-petal shaped sensors that fit around the breast. Each of these petals is equipped with electrodes that send and receive an imperceptible, low level electrical current into and out of a breast. The impedance data collected by these sensors are transmitted to a computer that does the number crunching and presents the diagnosis in real time.

    The pros of this method are many - it is painless, safe with no harmful radiation, quick (requires only 3 minutes to complete) and does not require an expert technician. Most importantly, preliminary results indicate the device is more effective than mammography, especially among young patients. However, as with any new technology, there are a lot of skeptics and more trials and improvements are required before this device can be rolled out as a replacement for existing screening methods. Till then, it can still serve a useful role in areas where access to mammography is limited or non-existent. Z-Tech plans to launch it this year in Asia and Europe, while in the U.S. a trial is on to achieve premarket approval.

    Snake Bites the Toxic Toad That Feeds It--and Spreads Its Poison

    It sounds like something straight out of a video game: A snake collects toxin by biting a poisonous toad and uses that venom as a defense against hawks and other predators. But that is exactly what researchers say the Asian snake Rhabdophis tigrinus does, based on studies of glandular fluid from hatchlings and adult snakes on two Japanese islands.

    Some R. tigrinus snakes carry toxins called bufadienolides in their nuchal glands, sacks located under a ridge of skin along their upper necks. When threatened, they arch their necks, exposing the poisonous ridge to an antagonist. The clawing and biting of hawks and other predators most likely rips the skin and lets the poison ooze out, potentially blinding the snake's attackers, says herpetologist Deborah Hutchinson of Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Va. "It might not kill the predator but it would be noxious enough to deter predation," she says.

    Nano-based capsule-Endoscopy

    Given Imaging Ltd., maker of PillCam capsule endoscopes, will be taking its technology to a totally different plane. With the help of European consortium (members: Zarlink Semiconductor (Sweden and UK), Fraunhofer Institute for Biomedical Engineering, Israelitic Hospital and Indivumed (Germany), Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine (London, England), ITC-irst Research Institute (Italy), The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Novamed and Ernst &Young of Israel), the company will be developing a capsule endoscopic system capable of molecular diagnostics to screen for GI cancers.
    The objective of the NEMO project is to increase patient compliance with currently recommended screening guidelines by developing an advanced cancer screening system that is patient-friendly, highly sensitive and specific for early detection of cancer. To achieve this NEMO will converge optical technologies with Nano-technologies, biosensing and maneuvering technologies to create a unique PillCam capsule endoscope capable of secretion analysis and the detection of marked and deep tissue disorders. The consortium believes the combination of the image and molecular analysis to mark the tumor may provide a novel and effective medical device for mass screening for GI cancer.

    Why is too much water dangerous?

    Jennifer Strange had taken part in the "Hold Your Wee for a Wii" game, which promised the winner a Nintendo Wii. Afterwards she reportedly said her head was hurting and went home, where she was later found dead. Initial tests have shown her death is consistent with water intoxication.

    Here is the explanation:

    Water enters the body when we drink and is removed primarily in the urine and sweat. If you drink too much water, eventually the kidneys will not be able to work fast enough to remove sufficient amounts from the body, so the blood becomes more dilute with low salt concentrations. The water then moves from the dilute blood to the cells and organs where there is less water.

    Professor Forrest likens this to the effects seen in science-class experiments. "If you put salty water on onion skin the cells will shrink, if you put too much water on it the cells will swell," he says. This swelling is a problem in the brain.

    "When the brain swells, it is inside a bony box so has nowhere to go," he says. "The pressure increases in the skull and you may get a headache. As the brain is squeezed it compresses vital regions regulating functions such as breathing." Eventually these functions will be impaired and you are likely to stop breathing and die.
